San Francisco Suicide Prevention Needs Volunteers

San Francisco Suicide Prevention could not exist without a dedicated group of 150 volunteers. Volunteers staff a number of functions at the agency from answering hotline calls, community outreach and administrative volunteers.

Crisis Line Volunteer

Are you a good listener? Caring? Supportive? Understanding? Do you need Supervision Hours for your graduate program? Do you want a real challenge? If you answered YES to any of the above questions, then San Francisco Suicide Prevention needs your help!

As a Crisis Line Volunteer, you will be providing emotional support in a non-judgmental manner, empowering callers to look at options and make their own decisions, providing crisis management, and providing information and referrals when appropriate. New volunteers must commit to an extensive two-month training class before answering calls. The minimum volunteer commitment is 4-hours per week for an entire year. We need volunteers day and night, 365 days a year!

AIDS/HIV Nightline Volunteer

The Nightline is always looking for caring volunteers living in the San Francisco Bay Area. In return for a one-year commitment, the Nightline offers an opportunity to fight HIV through meaningful, positive, emotional support. Those selected to volunteer will go through San Francisco Suicide Prevention’s comprehensive training that includes active listening and peer counseling methods, as well as HIV prevention, testing and treatment basics, domestic violence, substance abuse and suicidality.

As a volunteer, not only will you provide emotional support to The National AIDS/HIV Nightline callers, but crisis intervention and suicide prevention on the SFSP crisis line, harm reduction and emotional support on the SFSP Drug Information Line and Relapse Line and answer some of our after-hours contract resource lines.

For training details and an application form, please call or email our clinical director Sally Cerreta, LMFT at (415) 984-1900 extension 117 or sallyc@sfsuicide.org.

Linea Apoyo Volunteer

Linea Apoyo volunteers provide Spanish language services on all hotlines and attend Crisis Line training along with specialized courses. New volunteers must commit to an extensive two month training class before answering calls. The minimum volunteer commitment is 4-hours per week for nine months. Linea volunteers are needed from 6 to 10 pm, but we need Spanish speaking volunteers at all hours.
